Wide receivers can be a crucial part of any fantasy football draft. However, given injuries and depth and the amount of receivers that can make a fantasy impact, it isn't quite as important as running back. That said, my strategy this year is to look for value. In the early rounds that means not wasting a first round pick on an OBJ or Antonio Brown if it can be helped. There are plenty of running backs to go around in the first round of most leagues, and that's what I recommend going after first. Wait until the second or third round to take a guy like Keenan Allen, Larry Fitzgerald or Adam Thielen, who could easily put up WR1 numbers.
Before I get to my top 10 receivers this year, let's take a look back at how I predicted the top 10 a year ago:
Picked No. 1 for 2017, AJ Green. Actually finished: 11. For some reason I was really gung ho on him being amazing last year, and he was just not that. He was solid, don't get me wrong, but not at all as good as I expected.
Picked No. 2 for 2017, Julio Jones. Actually finished: 6. Not a bad pick here, but Julio did struggle through some injuries. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case even more this year. I think his days in the NFL are numbered.
Picked No. 3 for 2017, Antonio Brown. Actually finished: 1. Not a tough
pick to make, and he is expected to have yet another strong year, despite his age.
Picked No. 4 for 2017, Brandin Cooks. Actually finished: 12. Not horrible, but not particularly good either. He didn't flourish in NE as much as I expected. Perhaps he will with Goff in LA this year?
Picked No. 5 for 2017, Amari Cooper. Actually finished: 36. Thought he would make a leap in year three, but he fell back, so I'm sorry for this terrible pick.
Picked No. 6 for 2017, Odell Beckham, Jr. Actually finished: 93. He had a nasty ankle injury that limited him to four games last season, and he was third in average for WR, so not a bad choice really.
Picked No. 7 for 2017, Mike Evans. Actually finished: 19. I should have trusted my instincts even more and had him completely outta my top 10, but at least I advocated against picking him up early like many places were saying, so I'll take this as half a win.
Picked No. 8 for 2017, Jordy Nelson. Actually finished: 51.Terrible pick here, though Nelson's final year in GB was exacerbated by the loss of Rodgers. I think he also just aged out, and I was a year too late on predicting it.
Picked No. 9 for 2017, Micheal Thomas. Actually finished: 8. Nearly right on here, and as you will see, I think he'll probably more than replicate this finish once again in year three.
Picked No. 10 for 2017, Doug Baldwin. Actually finished: 13.Was not too far off here for Mr. Consistent, who as been around 180+ points each of the past three years. I think he could have a year or two of that production left.
No more fanfare necessary, here are my WR rankings for 2018:
1. DeAndre Hopkins: He will be reunited with Deshaun Watson and it should feel so good. Hopkins is supremely talented regardless of who is at QB, but with a good one like Watson, it should propel him to the top.
2. Antonio Brown: With Roethlisberger back and not retiring, his favorite target in Brown should once again be an elite option for fantasy goers. However, I suggest not taking him ahead of the top 8-10 RBs, and if someone does, that is not good value.
3. Michael Thomas: Brees is back, and Thomas is only going to get better. He finished last year as the 8th best WR and he should once again be the top dog in a very good Saints offense.
4. Adam Thielen: With Kirk Cousins at quarterback, Thielen is set to soar. He has proven his reliability with a top 10 finish despite only scoring four touchdowns. That total should go up as the Vikings offense should only be better.
5. Davante Adams: Adams will be Aaron Rodgers' top target, and his size and ability coupled with that makes him a very dangerous fantasy candidate.
6. Odell Beckham Jr.: Though I get a strange feeling that he could just fall off the NFL radar forever, it is just too damn hard to deny OBJ's talent. He is obviously super capable of putting up crazy numbers when healthy, so I think he is worth the risk in the late second or early third round of drafts.
7. Keenan Allen: The Chargers will need to throw to someone, and Allen has been an incredibly reliable pass catcher for Phil Rivers. He finished third in points last year despite only six touchdowns.
8. Tyreek Hill: Hill is incredibly explosive and can score at the drop of a hat. With new QB Pat Mahomes at the helm, the Chiefs will likely look to throw a lot of short passes to get playmakers the ball in space, and that means good things for Hill.
9. Juju Smith-Schuster: He was the No. 15 WR in 2017 despite only getting 79 targets in the passing game. He should be the No. 2 guy in a very good Pittsburgh offense, which means he could very well be in the top 10 this year.
10. Stefon Diggs: This makes four WR in the top 10 from either Pitt or Minny, and that is no joke. These are the two best tandems of wideouts in the league. Diggs is a great compliment to Thielen, and again with the addition of Cousins, Diggs will only improve from his 21st rank from a year ago.
Others receiving votes: AJ Green, Julio Jones, Doug Baldwin, Tyler Lockett, Alshon Jeffrey, TY Hilton, Larry Fitzgerald.
The final fantasy blog will cover my thoughts on TE, kickers and defenses next week.

Stand and Deliver
I discovered a new artist in Patrick Droney recently. His debut single, "Stand and Deliver" is a great example of what current rock can be. He has an EP out on streaming platforms, and the whole thing is pretty solid. I can't wait to see what he can come up with after more time songwriting in Nashville. I feel like he is certainly a potentially James Blake or even John Mayer-type talent.
Sorry that was short, but with two blogs I don't have too much time to spend on it :( Here are some photos of the first weekend of Region 8C in Pierz. Enjoy.

Fantasy preview week 2: Running backs
Running back is always an essential position in fantasy football. With the exception of quarterbacks, running backs score the most points because they both run and receive passes, and are often focal points of offenses. Unlike QBs though, RBs are much more scarce in both quality and quantity. That is in prime effect this season. I expect the first round of most drafts, especially those such as my own (.5 points per reception (PPR), will be littered with RBs. I think this is a smart strategy, and urge those who want to do well to take a first-round back this year. As for your second RB, based on mock drafts that I have both seen and participated in, there seems to be a lot of value in the 4-6 rounds in 10-12 team drafts for RB. One can draft a guy like Jay Ajayi or Dion Lewis, for example, in the 4-5 round range, and should have a very capable RB2. Obviously, loading up on RB in draft, even if they are backups or handcuffs is smart, because then one doesn't end up blowing waiver position or budget on someone down the road.
Let's take a look back at how I did predicting RB rankings a year ago:
Picked No. 1 for 2017, David Johnson. Actually finished:122. Obviously the early-season wrist break ended his season prematurely after scoring just 10 points. He was a consensus No. 1 pick a year ago, so I'm not too disappointed.
Picked No. 2 for 2017, Leveon Bell. Actually finished: 3. Nearly right on. Wasn't too tough a pick though.
Picked No. 3 for 2017, Devonta Freeman. Actually finished: 15. He missed a couple of games, but he also had his touches reduced quite a bit. Did not see his descent down from elite RB to RB2. It was a weird year in Atlanta.
Picked. No. 4 for 2017, LeSean McCoy. Actually finished: 7. Not too far off. As I stated in my preview a year ago, Shady is strong if he can stay healthy. He did in 2017.
Picked No. 5 for 2017, Melvin Gordon. Actually finished: 5. Hot damn! I was right on here. I knew that he would have a good year. I expect he'll be in the top five this year as well.
Picked No. 6 for 2017, DeMarco Murray. Actually finished: 24. Well, the now-retired back was mostly a dud a year ago in Titanville and he couldn't even find a team that wanted him this offseason.
Picked No. 7 for 2017, Isaiah Crowell. Actually finished: 33. I was a big believer in Crowell last year, but he never panned out in Cleveland. He is a Jet now, and is only 25, but don't expect to see him in my top 10 again!
Picked No. 8 for 2017, Jay Ajayi. Actually finished: 38. Another miss. Ajayi got traded to the Eagles midseason and was never really able to get enough to touches to make magic in Philly. He had merely 80 touches in 70 games despite averaging 5.8 yards per carry, but only scored twice.
Picked No. 9 for 2017, Christian McCaffrey. Actually finished: 11. Pretty close here. McCaffrey was as expected, a pass catching extraordinaire.
Picked No. 10 for 2017, Danny Woodhead. Actually finished: 74. Not sure what I was thinking here. Woodhead is old for a RB and injury-prone, so this was a pipe dream to think he'd go top 10.
As for this year's rankings, without further ado:
1. Todd Gurley II: I think he is a clear-cut No. 1. What he did, especially throughout the final weeks of the year and the fantasy playoffs was phenomenal. He has to be put at the top, especially since the Rams could be even better.
2. Alvin Kamara: Here is where I differ from a lot of other rankings that one might see. Since this is .5 PPR, Kamara is a great person to put here. He is so dynamic, and with him being the man for the first four games, he's going to destroy defenses this year.
3. Melvin Gordon: That's also another reason why my third pick is far from a lot of others. I think Gordon is going to have a huge year catching the ball. He proved he could remain healthy last season, and I wouldn't put it past him to be between 80-90 receptions this year. The Chargers O-line also improved.
4. Kareem Hunt: Another person that many are pegging as a recession candidate, but I think that he is only going to get better. He will likely be a safety valve for first-year starter Patrick Mahomes, and he is a good enough playmaker to turn that into plenty of fantasy potential.
5. Ezekial Elliot: Elliot should be better this season with a full year of playing and as the sole focus of the offense with Dez gone.
6. LeVeon Bell: Worried that he is at the point of his career that he could breakdown this year. However, the potential to be a top fantasy running back is still there, so I can't drop him down too far.
7. David Johnson: He only broke a bone last year, which shouldn't affect his ability to be a playmaker. He had a huge 2016, and was a consensus No. 1 pick a year ago, so I don't understand why he wouldn't eventually start to put up numbers when he shakes off the rust.
8. Christian McCaffrey: Another supreme talent in an offense that will likely get him the ball in space. If he can get in the endzone a few more times, he'll be a strong candidate to even go up to the top five.
9. Leonard Fournette: Their defense will keep them in close games, so he'll always be getting his fair share of touches. He is Jacksonville's most talented weapon, so I expect nearly 400 carries this year for 1,500+ yards and 10 touchdowns, but he is lower in this list, because he probably won't do a lot of pass catching.
10. Saquon Barkely: He was an absolute stud in college, and he is in a situation where he can start right away. I can see the Giants using him in an every down role, which is beneficial for fantasy of course.
Just outside the top 10 were Dalvin Cook, Jerrick McKinnon, LeSean McCoy and Kenyan Drake.
My plan this season for RBs is to be sure to get one of those top six or seven guys. I think they can all be very special. It will be a critical point for me. I can take or leave a lot of the runners who will go in the second and third rounds, so I'd likely get a strong WR and a top TE or two strong WR to fill out my roster before I draft my second and third RBs in the fourth to sixth rounds.
Stay tuned for WR next week!

Fantasy Football: Quarterback rankings
It is August and that means, once again, it is time to take a look forward (and back) to the fantasy football season. As I probably mention every year, I have been playing fantasy football since I was eight years old, making this my 22nd year, so this is something that I began doing before I had the internet and before fantasy football was cool. I don't know if that makes me any more credible, but it sounds good, right?
So, before I get to my 2018 rankings for quarterbacks, let us take a look back at how my predictions went from 2017.
Picked No. 1 for 2017, Tom Brady. Actually finished: 2. Very good selection. When Tom Brady says he is going to play for five more years, he means very, very well. I was good to trust that.
Picked No. 2 for 2017, Aaron Rodgers. Actually finished: 28. Rodgers obviously was injured for a good portion of 2017. Even so, he was seventh for QBs in average points per game, which still makes his season a bit of a disappointment. Not a great pick.
Picked No. 3 for 2017, Derek Carr. Actually finished: 16. I said in my predictions last year, " I truly believe that Carr will take another step forward." WRONG.
Picked No. 4 for 2017, Matt Ryan. Actually finished: 15. This is not going well. Yet another that was not even close to correct. I did not see Ryan's fall coming.
Picked No. 5 for 2017, Kirk Cousins. Actually finished: 8. Not too far off. If he had any talent around him apart from a concussion-plauged tight end, he'd be great. Maybe if he's with another team...
Picked No. 6 for 2017, Matthew Stafford. Actually finished: 5. Just about right on the money. This is starting to turn around.
Picked. No. 7 for 2017, Marcus Mariota. Actually finished: 22. Not sure what I was thinking here.
Picked No. 8 for 2017, Drew Brees. Actually finished: 10. Pretty solid choice here.
Picked No. 9 for 2017, Eli Manning. Actually finished: 18. This was a stretch to begin with, and yet another one where I was clearly out of my mind.
Picked No. 10 for 2017, Russell Wilson. Actually finished: 1. I vastly underrated Wilson. He had an amazing season, finishing more than 40 points ahead of second-ranked Brady.
I most certainly did not see Alex Smith and Philip Rivers finishing in the top five last year. Carson Wentz' ascension was also a surprise. Hard to believe he was still top 10 despite missing the last few games of the year. I hope that this year goes a little better. I had what I would consider 4-out-of-10 correct or acceptable picks, so let's see how I do this year. Without further ado, here are my 2018 top 10 QBs:
1. Tom Brady: Hasn't been wrong for a decade to pick Brady up here, and if last year was any indication it would be a mistake to think anything else this year.
2. Aaron Rodgers: Rodgers is still one of the best and most productive quarterbacks in the NFL. He will be healthy, and with a new TE target in Jimmy Graham, one can't go wrong with A-Rod at two.
3. DeShaun Watson: Assuming Watson is healthy, he is in a great position to dominate again. He was by far the best in average points per game last year. This also bolstered DeAndre Hopkins, who is one of the most talented WR in the league. Watson is also a running and touchdown threat. Again, assuming health, and he got hurt early enough last year to think that, he certainly has a ceiling this high.
4. Kirk Cousins: A lot of people do not believe in Kirk Cousins. However, and this is not because I'm a Vikings fan, but he will actually have some weapons this year, something he hasn't really ever had in Washington, so I think he is going to have a career year. Potential for 5k yards and 30 touchdowns.
5. Matthew Stafford: Always a solid performer, Stafford will likely not have a reliable running game, meaning he'll be forcing the ball to several strong receiving options.
6. Russell Wilson: I feel Wilson's 2017 was a bit of a fluke. He'll still be solid, but his top receiving threat is getting older, and he also lost Graham, too.
7. Matt Ryan: I'm not sure what the heck happened to the Falcons and Ryan last year, but with Julio Jones and a strong running duo, I think Ryan is due for a bit of a bounce-back year.
8. Jared Goff: Goff showed that he is a very good quarterback, finishing 11th in fantasy points for QBs last year. He should continue to improve as the Rams are a good team with a decent amount of weapons and should gain confidence in Goff.
9. Patrick Mahomes III: This is my sleeper pick. Anybody who drafts Mahomes as a top-10 QB would probably be considered off their rocker, but I think Mahomes, despite being a first-year starter, will be a stud. Watson did it, and I think Mahomes has just as many skills. He'll have Hunt to rely on in the run and pass game, and Tyreek Hill is a great weapon for a young QB.
10. Drew Brees: This could be Drew Brees' final year in the top 10. He was barely top 10 a year ago, and while a lot of people will go with a more sexy pick like Jimmy Garapollo, I think Brees has the tools still and most definitely the weapons to have a strong year.
Obviously Garappolo has a lot of upside. I always try and find someone who would be a surprise top-10 guy, but who I can draft in the 8th round or later. Obviously I'll be targeting Mahomes, but if he isn't available, another guy that I would think about drafting would be Tyrod Taylor or Blake Bortles. Sure they play for either terrible teams (Taylor) or are terrible themselves (Bortles), but fantasy is about the numbers, and they both have a lot of weapons to put up numbers whether in garbage time or elsewhere. Plus, they both run.
Next week I'll rank my top 10 RBs.

Big Last Name
Country music is in a state of disarray right now, except for a small sliver of country that has been getting it right. One great example of this slice of country music is Cody Jinks. His recently released, "Lifers" hearkens back to previous decades of country music. The music that country music was built on. I really enjoyed "Big Last Name," because it felt like something that listeners could line dance to. It was a total throwback. He also has a number of great ballads as well, such as "Desert Wind." If only all of country radio was like this, I wouldn't abhor listening to it.
I have a large number of photos from Little Falls Legion sub-state as well as Victory League Division playoffs from July 22. Enjoy.

When The Curtain Falls
I really hope that the release of the single, "When The Curtain Falls" (which is excellent by the way) means that Greta Van Fleet is releasing an album in the near future. I absolutely became obsessed with their first album, and based on this song, I'm confident a second album would also be super. Please be the case.
